Acupuncture for Stress, Anxiety & Sleep Support

The Way Back to Calm
In a world where everything moves fast and quiet moments are rare, stress has become a near-universal experience. At Chi Flow Acupuncture in Matakana, I offer acupuncture for stress and anxiety as well as sleep support, helping your body return to balance. Our nervous systems are constantly activated, and many of us struggle to unwind, even when we crave rest. This is where acupuncture can be a powerful ally: a grounded, effective way to support your body’s natural return to calm.

Understanding Stress Through Chinese Medicine
In Chinese Medicine, stress isn’t just an emotional experience — it’s a disruption in the natural flow of qi (energy) and blood. When qi becomes stuck, symptoms like insomnia, anxiety, fatigue, or digestive upset may arise.
Over time, chronic stress can deplete our reserves, affecting the Heart (Shen), Liver (emotion and movement), and Kidney (vital essence). Acupuncture for stress and anxiety works to restore harmony between these systems.

How Acupuncture Helps Stress and Anxiety
Acupuncture gently activates the parasympathetic nervous system — the “rest and digest” state. By selecting specific points like Shenmen (Heart 7), Yin Tang, and Liver 3, the body begins to soften and regulate. Breath deepens. Muscles release. Thoughts quiet.
With regular sessions, the body “remembers” how to return to equilibrium. This has wide-reaching effects:
Deeper, more consistent sleep
Less reactive emotional states
Improved digestion and hormonal balance
A stronger sense of resilience

What to Expect in a Session
Sessions begin with a short check-in to understand how stress is showing up for you. For many of my Matakana acupuncture clients, this might mean jaw tension, overthinking, burnout, or waking at 3 a.m. — these details guide your treatment.
Fine needles are placed on points that nourish your system and calm your mind. The treatment itself is quiet and spacious. Many clients drift into a deeply restorative state, sometimes falling asleep.
How Often Should You Come?
Acupuncture is a practice, not a one-off fix. Weekly or fortnightly sessions build momentum, especially during times of intense stress or sleep disruption. Maintenance visits help prevent relapse and anchor calm into your routine.
What Clients Often Say
Clients often describe feeling “lighter,” as if a weight has lifted. Some notice improved sleep and mood within a few treatments; others find they respond better to stress throughout the day. It’s not about erasing all challenges, but about strengthening your inner buffer.

Simple Tips to Support Calm Between Sessions
A five-minute journaling ritual to settle the mind before bed.
Begin a 5-minute evening wind-down ritual (herbal tea, journaling, warm bath)
Avoid screens an hour before bed
Practice abdominal breathing to settle the nervous system
Use acupressure on calming points like Pericardium 6 (Neiguan) or Heart 7 (Shenmen)
To locate Pericardium 6 (Neiguan), place three finger-widths down from the wrist crease on the inner forearm, between the two tendons in the middle of your arm. Apply gentle, steady pressure here to help ease anxiety and promote calm.
Heart 7 (Shenmen), known as the "Spirit Gate," is found on the wrist crease, on the little finger side, in the small depression next to the tendon. Light circular pressure or tapping on this point can soothe agitation and support restful sleep.
Using your thumb or index finger, apply firm but comfortable pressure for 1–3 minutes on each point, breathing deeply as you do. This simple practice complements your acupuncture treatments and supports your body’s natural ability to relax between sessions.
